What Rhymes with Mirabelli?
I love baseball, and the player I routinely find the most interesting is the catcher. It is logical therefore that I would be interested in the catcher of my favorite team, the Boston Red Sox. But this goes beyond logic -- I have what is called in Boston a "Wicked Crush" on Jason Varitek.
Now this is all fine and good. My husband is all set with my open love for this man (he has such a love for Beyonce). All is well, right? No. Varitek needs knee surgery and may very well be out for the rest of the season.
Would it make sense to just jump my love to the other catcher? The stand-in guy? The knuckle-ball man? Ah well, that would be...Doug Mirabelli.
I must confess, I have real affection for Doug, but it is simply not like my devotion for Tek. My love will simply not jump. So, what to do over the loss of my favorite player?
Red Sox fans are very used to loss -- and as a result, resourceful. I have found what Doug can do for me: I rhyme things with his last name and tie them to him as bio facts.
Do you know what I heard about Mirabelli?
He is smelly.
His favorite food?
Jelly.
Wife's name?
Shelly.
Favorite expression?
"Whoa Nelly!"
Biggest handicap?
A fat belly.
Poor Doug. It may be a long second half.

You could always root for the Yankees! Oh I kid, I kid, just stirring things up a bit.
But losing to the Yanks must be - hell-y! Knock it off G before she bans you!
Actually I root for the Mets (when I root) but I believe I'm going to a game on the 20th so I better bring myself up to speed!
Losing to the Yankees, ah yeah -- we know what that feels like. Losing a three game lead to them and then watching them go on to sweep the World Series -- now only Yankee fans can describe that agony.
I still love Pedro -- so the Mets are fine by me...although the amount of times they play the Buckner error is a bit much. Mets also have a great third baseman although his name is lost to me right now. Very young kid, great fielder, homerun-hitter.
My younger son's favorite Red Sox player was Damon, so now he does what is allowed in few NY or MA households: he roots for both the Sox and the Yanks. Here in Boston, they just chuck money into center field any time Damon is there.
Damn serious stuff for a game.
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I understand Beyoncé is going to play Bob Dylan in a movie.
I'm a Dodger fan through and through but based on our time in Boston the Red Sox hold a special place in my heart.
I like Mirabelli...a character of sorts, and the only backup catcher ever (guessing, but probably a safe bet) to get a police escort from the airport so that he could start for the Sox after being traded from the San Diego Padres....as I recall, he changed into his uni in the back of the limo...ran through the clubhouse to get his equipment and straight to the field...what a guy!! Lovable, I think...no?
Of course if Doug's not the guy for you there's always Coco, Trot (also hurt I believe), or Big Papi!
Doug: What-the? I feel like I just translated your comment from another language. Explain. Please. Also, baseball fan? If so -- who do you cheer for?
Joel: Ah the Dodgers. Right now, it seems the Dodgers have many ex-Sox. Hurt as always, Nomar is a serious long-term favorite of mine. I feel connected to the Dodgers because of their connection to Brooklyn, a place I enjoyed living for a while -- and because any team that is from NY, even formerly, and NOT the Yankees is a gem to me.
Oh yes, I have other guys to love -- Coco will even be featured soon on this very blog (if I can just learn to post pictures!). Timlin and Nixon are other favorites for sure. And thank you for knowing the Mirabelli story from the spring! He is a magician with the knuckle ball. Now if he could only bat over .200...
my favorite playa of all time is Ichiro Suzuki.
yeah, work with that. *sigh*
go 'HAWKS!!!
My inlaws live in your area FN, so we cheer for Seattle too. Ichiro has an amazing variety of swings -- like no one else. Plus he's cute. Having said all that, I am at a loss for the rhyming...any thoughts? Anybosy?
Anybosy? Anbody!
Looks like the loveable Javy Lopez is coming to the rescue in Beantown.
Yes and a great better too...and not a moment too soon. Poor Mirabelli -- the knee went one way and the ankle another tonight.
Oy! Not a great better! A great batter!
